A classic French upside-down caramelized apple tart.
Tarte Tatin is a delicious and elegant French dessert known for its caramelized apples and buttery pastry crust. This classic dessert is made by arranging sliced apples in a caramel sauce, topping them with pastry dough, and baking until golden brown. Once baked, the tart is inverted onto a serving plate, revealing the beautifully caramelized apples on top. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a truly indulgent treat.
Ingredients
- Apples — 6-8 medium-sized, peeled and cored
- Granulated sugar — 1 cup
- Unsalted butter — 1/2 cup
- Puff pastry — 1 sheet, thawed if frozen
- Vanilla ice cream — For serving
Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
2. In a 9 or 10-inch oven-safe skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
3. Add the sugar and cook, stirring occasionally, until it turns golden brown and caramelizes.
4. Remove the skillet from the heat and carefully arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern in the caramel, packing them tightly together.
5. Return the skillet to the stove and cook the apples in the caramel for about 10 minutes, or until they start to soften.
6. While the apples are cooking, roll out the puff pastry sheet slightly larger than the skillet's diameter.
7. Place the puff pastry over the cooked apples, tucking the edges down into the skillet.
8. Make a few small slits in the puff pastry to allow steam to escape during baking.
9. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
10. Remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
11. Carefully invert the tart onto a serving plate, allowing the caramelized apples to settle on top of the pastry.
12. Serve the Tarte Tatin warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
13. Enjoy this heavenly French dessert!
